If FTDI had wanted to be arseholes they could have popped up a message box to tell you it was non-genuine, and left the functionality alone. I believe it was implied that they instead tell you it’s a bogus chip, rather than tell you in addition to screwing with the chip at the same time. Apparently they can detect it and brick them/make them inoperable but a simple tool to check if that reel of chips you just bought is fake is too much trouble. What I find the most annoying thing in this whole story is that FTDI doesn’t release a tool that can detect non genuine chips.
